He Was Fighting To Keep His Beloved Dog, And Now He Finally Got The News He Had Been Waiting For
Three months ago, we told you about the story of Diggy. The dog became a viral star because of his appearance of a smile in his adoption pictures shared by the Detroit Dog Rescue he was staying at. The rescued dog was able to find his forever home, but his owner, Dan Tillery, quickly discovered a huge problem.
On Diggy’s paperwork, he was categorized as an American Bulldog. However, it is appeared to many that Diggy was a pit bull. In Tillery’s area of residence, it is illegal to keep this breed as a pet. After several images of Diggy and Tillery went viral, the police came across the viral images of the duo and decided that the animal had to go based on his appearance. Believing that Diggy was a pit bull, Tillery was told to get rid of his pet.
Tillery wasn’t going to give up his new best friend without a fight. Armed with the support of the shelter, Tillery was able to prove that Diggy was indeed a bull dog. While it took a while to get a judge to drop the case, the duo finally got the word this week that they could stay together!
“The love bug that captured the heart of the world is safe and will remain with his family, Dan and Megan, for the rest of his happy life,” Detroit Dog Rescue wrote online, according to The Dodo. “Diggy will share many more happy days with his family in Waterford, MI.”
Diggy’s story of discrimination is a reminder that these breed-specific laws still exist in many areas. Fortunately, they are slowly getting repealed, but there are still many animals that aren’t as lucky as Diggy.
You can join the fight against breed-specific laws by signing this petition to Congress. Together we can give all animals the chance at a forever home!
